To be honest, I don't really like drinking Coca-Cola, but I'm a huge fan of all other things the fizzy beverage can be used for.
A while back, I was searching the internet for a stain remover that isn't expensive or filled with harmful chemicals when I came across dozens of websites recommending Coke as an effective solution.
Lo and behold, the soda worked wonders, and it got me thinking about what else Coca-Cola can be used for. Turns out, there are so many different creative ways the soda can be used around the house. Check them out:
1. Get rid of tough stains
If you're having a hard time getting rid of stains left behind by markers, blood, coffee, wine, or grease, use Coke as a pre-wash treatment. The drink contains phosphoric acid, which is no match for tough stains.
Apply some of the soda directly on the affected area and let it sit for at least 30 minutes and up to two hours before throwing it into the wash.
Alternatively, you can simply pour a can of Coca-Cola into the machine at the start of your wash cycle.
2. Defrost a windshield
Winter is the worst season for car owners. In places where it snows a lot, drivers have to spend extra time cleaning snow and ice off of their vehicles.
If you're in a rush and don't want to wait for your car to heat up and melt the ice on the windshield, you can pour a can of Coke over it instead. The ice will immediately soften so you can easily wash the slush away and be on your way.
3. Wipe glass surfaces
Forget Windex and other chemical-heavy window and glass cleaners, and reach for a can of coke instead.
The citric acid in the soda makes it perfect for getting windows and other glass surfaces in your house looking spic and span.
Pour the beverage in a spray bottle and wipe the dirty surface with a clean cloth. To avoid leaving behind any Coke residues, finish off by wiping down the surface with warm water.
The same trick can be used to clean your eye glasses.
4. Tenderize meat
Pounding meat with a mallet works, but a less exhausting way to handle a tough cut is by using Coca-Cola.
Place the meat in a freezer bag, pour a can of Coke into the bag, then seal it and let it marinate for two to three hours before cooking.
5. Clean the toilet bowl
You don't need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive toilet cleaners anymore.
20 ounces of Coke is all you need to remove grime and bring your toilet bowl back to life. Just pour the soda into the toilet and let it sit for an hour before scrubbing away.
6. Remove rust from tools
Soak rusty tools in Coke for a day and you'll notice a difference as soon as you start to scrub them clean. Just make sure to rinse them well and let them dry before storing them again.
Keep repeating the process if the rust doesn't fully go away the first time.
You can also use Coke-soaked cloth to loosen rusty nuts and bolts as well as to restore shine to metal furniture.
7. Remove burnt-on food
Sometimes it can seem like it's impossible to remove burnt food from your pots and pans. Soaking them in water only doesn't do much, but what works like magic is Coca-Cola.
Pour some of the sugar drink into the pot or pan and let it soak for a couple of hours before scrubbing the gunk away. Just remember to wash it with some soap and water.
8. Make BBQ Sauce
Coca-Cola BBQ sauce sounds odd, but don't knock it until you try it.
Not only will marinating your meat in this homemade sauce give it a unique taste, it also makes the meat very tender.
Combine a cup of coke with one cup ketchup, 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 cup A-1 steak sauce, 1 teaspoon liquid smoke, and finally, 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Place all the ingredients in a heavy saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer until the sauce is reduces by a quarter, about six to eight minutes, then allow to cool before using or storing.
9. Keep slugs at bay
After spending so much time taking care of your garden, the last thing you want is for some pesky pests to destroy all your hard work.
One of the best ways to get rid of tiny creatures like slugs and snails is by leaving a bowl filled with Coke in your garden overnight.
10. Fertilize soil
Coca-Cola increases the organic matter in soil, which great for boosting the growth of plants like hydrangeas, azaleas and gardenias, which thrive in soil with high acidity.
11. Neutralize skunk odor
No, tomato juice doesn't get rid of skunk odors, but there a few other unexpected liquids, like Coca-Cola, that work well.
If you don't have any hydrogen peroxide on hand, wash yourself with Coca-Cola to neutralize the nasty smell.
12. Soothe a jellyfish sting
Next time you head to the beach, bring some extra cans of Coke because they could be useful in more than just quenching your thirst.
One study found that Coca-Cola not only reduces the pain of a jellyfish sting, it also controls the skin's reaction by between 25 and 75 per cent. The carbonated beverage works in soothing the injury because of its acid content.
