For plenty of people, their first job is a sign of emerging adulthood and becoming a contributing member to society.
Receiving your first paycheck is also a pivotal moment in anyone's life, as it represents a person's ability to fend for themselves and their new sense of freedom.
But, that doesn't mean when you're given your first check you can't do anything fun with your new stack of cash.
And since not everybody chooses to spend their earnings in the same way, here's what 10 celebrities decided to spend their first paycheck on.
First purchase: A new Mercedes
Even though Jennifer Lopez looks ageless, she's come a long way from being simply "Jenny from the Block," and her first purchase of a sweet new ride proved just that.
"I was driving a Honda hatchback that Keenen Ivory Wayans had given me when I moved out here when I was a Fly Girl [dancer on In Living Color]. And I had been driving it to every audition," Lopez said in a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter.
She continued: "And when I got, I think it was a regular series, I bought a car — a Mercedes. And it was a huge deal, though I was signing the lease to the car and breaking up with my boyfriend the same week. We were in the dealership and I was crying and he was going back."
"It became a thing, like, 'I'm gonna be on my own.' He had been living with me. We had been dating for 10 years. And I was like, 'That's it. The Hatchback is out, and so are you!'" the actress added.
2. Elizabeth Banks
First purchase: Jeans, earrings and movie tickets
While Elizabeth Banks portrayed the extravagant Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games trilogy, she was as errand girl at a Catholic youth center. Banks was only 12 years old when she took on the less-than-glamorous job, and according to Vogue, it provided her the funds to buy all the necessities a preteen would want.
“I ran the after school game room and then on Saturday mornings I ran the front desk where I did memberships. We had a basketball league, I handed out coffee to all the parents, I got lunch for the coaches,” she said, before adding that she spent her earnings on jeans, earrings and movie tickets.
3. Kerry Washington
First purchase: A laptop
Although Kerry Washington's known her iconic portrayal of Olivia Pope on Scandal, the actress didn't start off with high-profile roles, and knew she had to spend her paycheck wisely.
"This is so Bronx girl of me. My first movie was a crazy guerilla filmmaking, independent movie, so our transpo department was a Metrocard," Washington told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Save the Last Dance was my second movie, and we had a per diem. I couldn’t believe somebody was handing me cash and I literally used to hide it under my mattress for the whole movie. I put myself on a tight budget of what I could spend," she continued.
"And at the end of it, I used all the cash from the three months and bought my first laptop," she concluded.
4. Brad Pitt
First purchase: Furniture
At 54 years old, Brad Pitt has had a successful acting career for the past 30 years. Although he's worth an estimated $240 million, he didn't initially spend his earnings on high-priced items. Instead, he chose to furnish his home.
"When I received my first paycheck from my now known day job, I spent it on a period Craftsman chair and a Frank Lloyd Wright–wannabe lamp. With my second paycheck, I bought a stereo," Pitt told Architectural Digest.
5. Sarah Paulson
First purchase: Clothes from the Gap
Sarah Paulson has always been a brilliant actress, but she spent her first paychecks on one clothing brand you wouldn't normally see a Hollywood elite wear out and about.
"I bought a lot of stuff at the Gap because I was 19. I was still living at home and I was understudying Amy Ryan on Broadway in The Sisters Rosensweig and my check was substantial," Paulson shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
"I had never had a job before, ever, anywhere. I was a waitress for two seconds but I couldn’t spell 'parmesan' and I quit, promptly. So, I got a big, big weekly check from understudying and I went to the Gap, like every day," the American Horror Story actress said.
"And I would give Gap presents to all my friends. That and there were some flaming Dr. Pepper drinks down on 11th Street and Third Avenue. That was my big splurge. I should have gotten a car!" she added.
First Purchase: A washing machine
"I bought my mom and dad a washing machine," Kidman said in an interview with TIME. "Later on, I bought some boots for myself that were like the coolest boots I had ever seen in my life."
7. Serena Williams
First purchase: Nothing - she deposited it into the bank!
Serena Williams may be one of the world's most famous athletes, but she's also savvy when it comes to her estimated $180 net worth. In fact, she didn't even spend a penny of her first paycheck, which was a cool $1 million.
"I never touched [the money] — I just put it in the bank. I remember I went through the drive-thru to deposit my check, and then they were like, ‘I think you need to come in for this,’ and so I ended up going inside,” she said on Kneading Dough.
8. America Ferrera
First purchase: A car
If you've ever seen America Ferrera on television or the cinema, you know she's an incredible leading lady. But before the new mom's skyrocketed into fame, she starred in the Disney Channel movie, Gotta Kick It Up! and immediately knew what she would spend her hard earned cash on.
"With my first paycheck, I went and bought a car. It was a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage. It was used, and I think it cost me $12,000," told InStyle.
"The hardest thing about growing up in L.A. was getting a ride anywhere. I used to have to ride, like, three buses to get to an audition," the Ugly Betty actress continued.
"This was pre-Uber, not that I would’ve been able to afford Uber if it had been around. I had to ride the bus, I had to walk, I had to ride my bike, I had to beg my siblings for a ride. Getting your own car in L.A. is a huge right of passage," she said.
9. Johnny Depp
First purchase: A horse farm
While Johnny Depp has been involved in an onslaught of controversy these past few years, his love for his family has never wavered
In a tell-all interview with the Rolling Stone, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor revealed he spent one of his first paychecks as an actor on a small horse farm near Lexington, Kentucky for his late mother, Betty Sue.
"Betty Sue, I worshiped her," Depp said. "She could be a real b*tch on wheels."
10. Cindy Crawford
First purchase: Wallpaper
Although Cindy Crawford is known for being a mega-famous supermodel, she isn't just a fashionista. The mother-of-two also has great taste when it comes to interior designing, and even spent her first paycheck on revamping her home.
"I still remember what I spent my first paycheck on — wallpaper. Says a lot doesn’t it?" she tweeted.
